More is better.
Of course you are thinking it simply depends. A nice Krispy Kreme donut is a culinary delight, especially if it has fresh bacon pieces on top! You know the routine. You eat one. Then, weakness sets in, and you have another one. Then the reality sets in that perhaps one was enough, and more was not better!
We are programmed by American culture that more work is better. There are many good things about working hard, and “moving on up” in the world. However, at times we need to stop and ask how American culture has shaped our view of God?
In some circles there is the perception that the more we do for God the more of His favor we may attain. Or, the more we do, then we know that we are in a good standing with Him. If 5 minutes of prayer is good, then 15 minutes of prayer is better? What about an hour of prayer?
The biblical person, Martha, fell in this trap as she scorned her sister, Mary, for not doing enough for Jesus (Luke 10:38-42). The truth is as Americans sometime we need to simply stop, and worship God. To avoid the temptation to always be “doing.” As the Israelites looked at the tightly locked fortress of Jericho, they would again see that the path forward was not a path of their own power and ingenuity. Rather, the path to victory would be one that viewed winning as worship. In following God’s Word, and allowing God to be God, then, they would know victory. A good lesson to embrace for us! Sometimes we need to allow God’s power shine through our weakness, and trust Him (1 Corinthian 4:7).
