Remember: Memorial Day 2015

Some people do not like to remember.  Some people see little need to remember, and simply want to act like the past is not part of the present, nor has power to shape the future.  I hear many people who do not think that it is necessary to remember the Holocaust, and think that surely there is no need for a museum for this tragedy of humanity.  Every February, I know I will hear from some of my friends that there is no need to engage issues related to civil rights and slavery in America.  As they mumble, “let’s move forward with life, and let the past remain there.”  Yet, we remember to not repeat, and to speak out.

Today, is a day that we stop and remember.  We remember that innocent, and often very young, blood was shed for our freedoms...for the freedom to remember and speak as free people in a free land.  We are blessed to live in America, and that blessing rests on human sacrifice.  While many of us may not know a person who gave his or her life for our freedoms, we should move beyond the ribs, hot dogs, corn-hole, and beverages of this Memorial Day weekend, and remember that our freedom comes with a price. Then give thanks in some manner for liberty.  In remembering, we move forward on a course of freedom.

Let us also remember this Memorial day weekend that Christ’s blood was shed so the critical war of one’s soul might know freedom.  Christ was willing to enter into the battle of humanity, and give His life so that we can have eternal and abundant life.

Celebrate Memorial Day, and move beyond the ribs to genuine remembrance. If we do not remember, then we may walk a path of repeating history.
