How did the week turn so quickly? Jesus road into Jerusalem with the shouts of Hosanna (Mark 11:9-10)! Praise shouts of the people wanting God to come and save! They were proclaiming, “Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!”
Jesus came to Jerusalem. He came with a mission.
Some missions are easier to understand than others. For Jesus, His mission directive was clear: death. On that glorious day that Jesus entered Jerusalem on the back of a donkey He was being completely obedient to the Father’s will. His mission directive would provide a means for all to live, and not experience spiritual death. You see, Christ came and died for you. Christ died for sins, once for all, the perfect and just one for the unjust (you and me), in order that He might bring us to God…(1 Peter 3:18).
The King came! Yet, He would struggle with His mission in the quiet of Gethsemane (Mark 14:36); however, he would divinely acquiesce to the Father. Then, the trials came...the psychological and spiritual separation and pain...as the Roman cohort began the end, as they took their weapons and beat and mocked Him to a place of death. If the scourging was not enough...the uncleanness from the spitting would mock Him (Mark 15:16-21). We ask, “why?” How did the week turn from triumph to trials so quickly?
Simply stated, “He did it for you...for me...and for the person next to you that you don’t like.” By His scourging we have life (Isaiah 53:5). Hosanna!
